How Anastrozole Works
Anastrozole lowers the amount of oestrogen in the body. The female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone stimulate many breast cancers to grow. Lowering the level of oestrogen can stop or slow the growth of breast cancer cells. Anastrozole blocks a process called aromatisation which changes sex hormones called androgens into oestrogen. Thus, this review focuses on the differences between the non-steroidal aromatase inhibitors allowing physicians to choose between these compounds based on scientific evidence. Although we are waiting for the important results of a still ongoing head-to-head comparison in patients with early breast cancer at high risk for relapse, clinicians have to make their choices today. On the basis of available evidence summarised here and until FACE-data become available, letrozole seems to be the best choice for the majority of breast cancer patients whenever a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor has to be chosen in a clinical setting.

Arimidex is sometimes used to treat male breast cancer, but it has not been well studied in men.Arimidex been studied for use by infertile men to balance testosterone levels and maintain a healthy sperm count.Some male athletes and bodybuilders who take anabolic steroids to build muscle also take Arimidex to reduce the estrogen production that is a side effect of steroid use.
